Lorenzo Vigas’ striking debut feature won the Golden Lion at Venice and offers a poised, acutely-observed account of the way intimate bonds can be forged from the strangest of circumstances. Middle-aged Armando (Castro) cruises the streets of Caracas in search of young men who might warm his lonely life if the price is right. Whilst macho homophobic teenager Elder (Silva) initially rejects his advances their encounter sparks a connection that slowly deepens, seesawing between acts of kindness and violent retaliation as both men discover a need to be cared for. Complex, rigorously unsentimental and affecting.
