Sir David McVicar

Actor and Director appearing at the first Glasgay! festival in 1993

Sir David McVicar appeared at the first Glasgay! in 1993 as director of the Pen Name Theatre Company. He was born in Glasgow and trained as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, from where he graduated in 1989. He has since gone on to be one of the world’s most sought after opera directors.

His productions have been seen all over Europe, and the United States of America, but he maintains close links with the British houses, including the Scottish Opera of his home city. In recent years, all of his productions for Scottish Opera – COSI FAN TUTTE, LA TRAVIATA, DER ROSENKAVALLER and MADAMA BUTTERFLY were all received to great critical acclaim, and in the 2010/11 season at London’s Royal Opera House, he was the director for a substantial number of its highest profile productions.

In 2007 David McVicar was listed in the top 100 most influential gay and lesbian people in Britain, and was knighted in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to opera.
