Peter Greenaway subverts the stodgy conventions of the biopic with swashbuckling irreverence in this restless, inventive reflection on filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s life-changing visit to Mexico in 1931. We encounter the director of Battleship Potemkin as he travels south to start work on his ill-fated epic Que Viva Mexico, having spent two long, frustrating years in Hollywood. He is instantly smitten by the country, and by his handsome Mexican guide Palomino Cañedo (Luis Alberti). Eisenstein’s sexual awakening becomes the focus of an exuberant, multifaceted production that celebrates the intertwining of creative energies and carnal desires.
