Sad Eyes to Smile With

Ink Asher Kemp

Fri 6 September 2019, 7pm-8pm

The Wynd, 6 School Wynd, Paisley PA1 2DB

Tickets £5 book here

A stunning piece of performance poetry by Ink Asher Hemp. Ink is definitely a rising talent to watch in the poetry and theatre scene.

Queer identity plus slam poetry divided by austerity and multiplied by three. It’s odd socks, deadline chasing, ice cream and brown envelopes from the DWP. It’s the days when you can and the days when you can’t and the days when you’re eaten by anger. It’s being hugged so tight you forget how to breathe. It’s listening restlessly and choosing to dream.

This is my view, Edinburgh, from 30 feet up. Sitting on the wall of a multi-story carpark, watching the seagulls, sheltered from the wind by the fabric of society. Home. We are 987,000 lungs… breathing, overthinking, stealing. This one..? it’s for the sisters, for the misters and the binary resisters…welcome 50 minuets without caveats, 50 minuets of answers to the questions society never asked.

Sad Eyes to Smile With had work in progress sharings at Dundee Rep and Waterside Arts Centre in Manchester.

No matter how long the winter – spring is sure to follow. A story about journeys, routine, missed moments, pain, irrational thoughts, assumptions, fear, surprising compassion, screens, memories, loneliness, coffee and unlikely friendships. It’s about how we connect with those around us even on the smallest level and the impact we have on others without knowing it. It’s about seasons and change and how nothing ever stays the same. But mostly it’s about hope and how finding those moments of connection make the world a better place.
