Morwenna Kearsley – artist & photographer

Morwenna Kearsley is working with Renfrewshire Council and the THCARs2 Regeneration team on a free 12-week photography course PICTURING PAISLEY that explores Paisley’s textile and architectural heritage.

Morwenna Kearsley wants to work with adult participants in a group to consider the photo-essay as a means to tell stories and discover more about Paisley’s past, present, and future. Participants will look at and visit archives to get a sense of Paisley’s rich history, make new photographs together by getting out and about and will experiment with a range of creative techniques to make their own unique photo-essay.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about:

  • The history of photography and the photo-essay
  • How to use a camera and compose creative photographs
  • How to use an archive and find interesting stories and photographs from the past
  • Paisley’s history in textile and thread manufacturing (thinking in particular about the architecture associated with this)
  • Creative writing techniques
  • Editing your photographs into a photo-essay
    And much more!

This course would suit both complete beginners in photography and those with some experience. The main emphasis is on having fun, developing some new skills and reflecting on the rich cultural heritage of Paisley in a safe and relaxed group environment.

Morwenna is an artist and photographer based in Glasgow. She studied for a degree in Photography & Filmmaking at Napier University in Edinburgh and later she obtained a scholarship to study on the Master of Fine Art course at The Glasgow School of Art. She still loves to make photographs using analogue film and darkroom printing techniques, as well as using digital technologies and creative writing.

Her work and research attempts to understand the complexity of image-making and image-receiving, often through writing: weaving archival research with autobiographical events to agitate and disrupt my understanding of what a photographed or filmed image can be and how it acts on our collective memory, our homes, and our towns and cities. As well as exhibiting regularly, nationally and internationally, she also works as an arts educator for adults and children, across a wide range of organisations.

John Walter – visual artist

John Walter will be working with Outspoken Arts and Paisley Art Institute on a new VR production THE FOURTH WALL for the PAI’s 131st Annual Exhibition 7 Sep-20Oct 2019. details tba.

John Walter (b. Dartford, 1978) is a visual artist working across a diverse range of media including painting, moving image and installation. He studied at Chelsea School of Art and Design, The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, The Slade School of Fine Art and was awarded a doctorate by The University of Westminster in 2017. In 2006 he was artist in residence at KIAC in Dawson City, Canada. Between 2006-8 he was Sainsbury Scholar at The British School at Rome. He was a participant in Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2012. In 2017 he undertook a residency at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England have supported his work. He was awarded the 2016 Hayward Curatorial Open for Shonky: The Aesthetics of Awkwardness. The Arts Council Collection and The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool have collected his work. Recent exhibitions include: The Fourth Wall (Look Again Festival, Aberdeen, 2019); Booze Guitar (Matt’s Gallery, 2018); CAPSID (CGP and HOME, 2018); Somewhere in Between (Wellcome Collection, 2018); Coming Out: Sexuality, Gender and Identity (Walker Art Gallery, 2017).

Nelly Kelly – writer

Nelly is working with Queen Jesus Productions and Outspoken Arts on Untitled 2009 is a brand new play written by Nelly Kelly and directed by David Wood, produced as part of the 10th Anniversary celebrations of The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven, by legendary trans artist and activist Jo Clifford. Supported by Outspoken Arts Scotland. All events will take place at the Tron Theatre, exactly ten years after Queen Jesus’ premiere at the theatre in November 2009 to mark the anniversary and celebrate and reflect on its impact and legacy. 

Nelly is a trans, non-binary playwright, performer maker and drag artist. They have a masters with distinction in Playwriting and Dramaturgy from the University of Glasgow and are a former Playwrights Studio Scotland mentored Playwright. Their works unapologetically sets out to take up space to put queer life and culture centre stage, with a particular focus on Trans identities.

Recent credits include;  Queersa Gay: Fields of Gold, Buzzcut, CCA Glasgow (creator/performer). Haus of Gay, Queer Theory, Nice ‘n’ Sleazy Glasgow (drag art collaboration), The Dogwood, Pride Plays, Traverse Theatre Edinburgh (writer), Sacramental, Mintworks, Guest Projects London.

David Wood – Theatre Director

David is a director and theatre-maker based in Glasgow. Originally hailing from Ayrshire, at the core of his practice is a desire to open access to the arts, regardless of economic or social background. David has worked alongside a number of Scotland’s leading theatre companies, including Bard in the Botanics, Capall Dorcha, Borderline and Visible Fictions. His work, though varied, often focuses on new writing, work for young audiences and queer theatre, topics particularly close to his heart.

David graduated with an MA in Classical and Contemporary Text (directing) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, is a recipient of the Dewar Arts Award and is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Recent director credits include: Perfectly Norman (Puppetry Scratch Night);  Play Me Out, A Word Please and Last Orders (Overlap Theatre Company) and A Beginner’s Guide to Populism  (NoLogoProductions).
